No Studio, No Fuss – Just Real Maternity Photography in Cardiff

There’s something really special about photographing someone in a place that actually means something to them, not just a pretty backdrop, but a chapter of their story.

Naomi, a solo mum by choice and a midwife (yes, a bloody hero), invited me to capture her maternity photography session in Roath Park, right near her flat in Cardiff. She told me she planned to spend her days here once the baby arrived. It felt calm, intentional, and full of quiet excitement.

This wasn’t just an outdoor maternity photoshoot; it was a snapshot of where her new chapter begins.

Naomi hadn’t done anything like this before, and to be honest, neither had I. This was my first outdoor maternity shoot (I'm usually tucked up inside doing cosy home sessions). But something about Roath Park, the autumn air, and Naomi’s gentle strength made the whole thing feel easy. She started off a bit nervous — totally normal, but still absolutely glowing.

She wore a bump-hugging dress and the perfect coat that made the whole thing feel like a film. The trees glowed orange against the heavy, grey sky.. This is what I love about natural maternity photography, it’s soft, honest, and soaked in whatever the day gives you. No pressure. No forced smiles.

Right near the end, Naomi switched it up. Jeans and a bra. Hair in the wind. Bare skin, bare bump. Brave, beautiful, and totally in her element. The confidence in that moment was unreal, like she dropped all the nerves and just stood there as herself, totally owning it.

I honestly felt so lucky to witness that shift. Watching someone step into their power like that? It never gets old.

This session reminded me why I love what I do. Naomi trusted me to capture this huge moment in her life, and I’ll never take that for granted.

And personally, stepping out of my home-session comfort zone and into the wind and leaves of Roath Park? I owe that to her. To her trust, to her story, and to the way she made it feel like we were just two women walking and talking and creating something that really mattered.
